Baby Potty Training #2

The second step in baby potty training-Showing. Sometimes this step can coincide with step one. Time to get a potty chair. This can be an exciting thing or a casual thing. If your child loves to get presents or picking out things at the store then make it a celebration. Either wrap one up all pretty as a gift or let them pick one out. You know your child best, so you know what they would prefer.

If you feel that going shopping or opening up a gift/present is too much, because your child eases into everything slowly. Then make it a casual thing and just place the potty where they can discover it on their own. Try to let them be the leader at first. Don’t ask them to use it yet, unless they really want to. There is still so much more to show them. Tell them, “you have your very own potty chair to sit and go pee or poop on.”

Leave toilet seat adapters, for after they have been using the potty chair on regular basis. Sometimes the big potty is too high, sometimes it’s being used. Using the big potty can be too scary yet. Some kids like their new potty chair, they can stand on it with the lid down and use it for a step stool. They can sit and read a book on it. They can sit on it with their clothes on or off. Let them decide what they would like to do. They should leave it in the bathroom, so they learn that is the place to go potty.

Pull ups can be very helpful during the potty training steps but they are not a necessity. It is easier for your child to pull them up and down by themselves. You can explain what the pull ups can do and they can take them off when they use the potty chair and pull them back up when they are done.

You are your child’s #1 role model. The greatest way the show your child how to use the potty, is you, you do it. Sit on the potty and go potty in front of them. Some people are not comfortable with someone watching them while the use the potty. Just remember you are the #1 tool during the showing stage. Your child will see first hand what to do on the potty.

You should not do this if you are not comfortable with it. Your child will know your discomfort and may associate that with going potty, which could cause them to hesitate. If you are fine with it, then do it! Kids are always copying what we do. Tell them when you need to visit the potty and ask them if they would like to come with you. They can either watch you or they can sit on their potty.

This is the time to TELL and SHOW all of the steps. Explain out load everything you do. “First I pull down my pants, I sit down on the potty, I go potty, I wipe, I pull my pants back up, I flush the potty and then I wash my hands.” You could even let them flush the potty for you. Some children get scared when the potty is flushed, so use your own judgment. Some parents and children like to wave and say goodbye, when the potty is flushing.

If you have another child that can show the process, that is great too. I urge all dads and older brothers to sit during the showing stage with boys. This makes it easier for having bowel movements and little boys are not accurate at aiming during the potty training stage. You don’t want to be frustrated about them peeing all over the place, they will sense it and regress. Dads and brothers will need to show how they need to push their pee pee down so the pee goes into the potty and not spray up. NEVER FORCE YOUR CHILD, IT WILL BACKFIRE.

The frist step in baby potty training is to talk to your child about it. Talk to your child when you change their diaper, “your diaper is wet and now I am putting on a dry diaper” or “your diaper is poopy, now I am putting on a clean diaper.”

Always try your very best to keep your child in a dry and clean diaper. Change them every time they soil their diaper, even if it is only a little bit. It is crucial during the potty training stages, because you want your child to enjoy being clean and dry. The more they enjoy being clean and dry the easier it will be. If you are not a big fan of changing them more often, just keep telling yourself, this is one less diaper you will change later when your child is out of diapers.

Talking to your child about potty training needs to be positive and happy. Never say negative things about going potty in there diaper or when you’re changing your childs diaper. Never laugh, make fun or make jokes about going poop or pee, especially associated to their diaper. They may look at that as a form of attention. They may start to soil their diaper to get that attention. They need to feel good about potty training talk.

When you see that your child is having a bowl movement, ask them gently, WITH OUT embarrassing them, “are you going poop?” Then leave them be. If they usually go to another room and you know they are having a bowel movement, then leave them be. When they are done, you can then ask them if they just pooped? If they don’t have much to say about it, check their diaper, then explain to them what they did “you pooped in your diaper” or “you peed in your diaper.” This will give them an exact name and example of WHAT they are doing.

Be sure to always ask in a nice happy tone, you never want them to have any negative feelings associated with pooping or peeing.

Talk about the family pet, “Spot goes potty outside, and then we put that potty in the garbage” or “the kitty goes potty in the litter box and when I clean it out I put it in the garbage, just like we do with your wet or poopy diapers.” Talk to your child about the fact that everyone goes pee pee, and poop. Give them examples like “when I have drank a lot of water, I need to pee on the potty.”

Talking about everything will give your child a clear picture of the whole process of potty training. This will create a good understanding they can do. Understanding creates confidence. With confidence comes success!
