We purchased this product for the top of the stairs in our home. At this time, we are still in the process of installing this piece of garbage. So far, we have had problems opening up the battery compartment door, because the screw was stripped. While that was frustrating, it is nothing compared with the fact that 2 – yes, that’s right, TWO – of the screws used for the mounting hardware have broken off. Now, we have TWO broken off screws in our newel posts and no way to get them out. I have to believe that this is NOT how the manufacturer intended this gate to work. Now I have an inferior gate that will not be installed properly and my daughter may or may not be safe from spills down the stairs. Additionally, when it is time to remove the gate we will have TWO broken off screws sticking out. That’s nice and safe, now isn’t it? I can already imagine the lovely cuts and scrapes that my daughter, future children, and their friends will enjoy thanks to the shoddy manufacturing by Summer Infant. Please, please, PLEASE do not purchase this product.

I’m going mad trying to find out how tall this gate actually is! Why would a company advertise a product as extra tall and NEVER (unless I’ve already lost it) tell a consumer the actual height? I’ve looked at a dozen websites, as well as The First Year’s own website. Nothing. Zip. Ziltch. No mention of the height. I’m also surprised to see no reviewers happened to mention the height.

    Can anyone help me out?

  3. I’m hoping that someone who’s already purchased this product can help me out with a question. I purchased this gate yesterday, but after reading the onlineliterature further, I became confused on the full width of the gate. It states that it’s 47 1/2 or 48 inches (depending where you look), and claims to come with a 5 inch extension and a 10 inch extension. Does the dimension of 47 1/2 inches includes the 10 inch extension, or does it not. If it doesn’t, does that mean that the actual gates full possible width would be 57 1/2? I think that they could clear this up a lot better on the description.

gate is ok, overpriced i think. problem i had with gate is that my doorway is about half inch to small for the extension so i had to expand the pressure bolts almost all the way out to get it to fit. with the bolts all the way out the gate is not sturdy and had problems tightening the bolts cause they kept spinning on the wall. so if your doorway is in-between sizes where it almost needs the extensions but they wont fit the gate is not very good. they should let the measurements for the extensions overlap a little more to eliminate the problem.
