Although it would be great to have a big hamster family, you should first find out if you are ready to face such a responsibility. Yes, baby hamsters are quite adorable but what happens next?
You might want to ask yourself these two questions:
1. What will you do with the babies?
2. Which hamsters will you pick to become the new mom-and-dads to be?
Let us start with the first question. On average, litter size is 4 to 6 but some varieties such as the Campbell Russian can give birth to 14 baby hamsters. Can you imagine taking care of more than a dozen little hamsters? You might say that you can breed them and afterwards sell them to a pet store.
Good idea? Wrong. Many stores do not want to get hamsters sold by just anybody. Since this would not work, you will end up caring for all of them yourself, unless you give them away to family and friends. Now, what if they become sick? Usually, if one hamster is sick, it easily becomes contagious and that means many of your pet hamsters will become sick too. Read more...
One worry for second-time-around parents is how their toddler or preschooler is going to cope with the new baby. Follow these tips and nip any problems in the bud before they begin:
First of all, be realistic. Nothing can completely wipe out the envy and confused feelings your toddler is bound to have once the baby arrives, so be prepared to deal with babyish and perhaps aggressive behavior from your older child. There is very much an element of just riding the choppy seas of change at this time.
Go softly, softly when it comes to discussing the new arrival. Talk about the baby (What toys do you think the baby will play with? etc) – but not every day.Observe any signs of confusion in your toddler’s face and change the subject if necessary.
A good way to help prepare your child is to read some new baby stories to them. You can buy or borrow some really innovative ones that allow your child to safely explore his or her feelings about this impending change. Read more...
Any living organism is sooner or later exposed to all sorts of dysfunctional conditions, and dogs are no exception. It is true that there are plenty of dog health problems that we prevent by regular vaccination, but what can we do about the rest of the affections that may take us and our animals unawares. Let’s take for instance vomiting and diarrhea, these are the most common and frequent dog health problems. Their causes are usually very simple since no complications result from such minor dog health problems that are mainly triggered by improper nutrition.
If under routine treatment vomiting and diarrhea don’t disappear within twenty-four to forty-eight hours, it could mean there are serious dog health problems at stake and an immediate thorough examination is a must. Should this be the case, such a dog health problem is no longer the subject of home treatment, but a real medical emergency. The first thing to be done when experiencing similar dog health problems is to eliminate food and water. If you’re dog is thirsty give it some milk or an ice cube to lick several times. Read more...
Important news For Breast Cancer
Breast cancer can affect one in eight women, and is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States, second only to lung cancer. There doesn’t seem to be any definitive prevention for breast cancer, but there are certain risk factors that make women susceptible, including age and genetics. Women with genes BRCA1 and BRCA2, or women that have family history of breast cancer, should get tested regularly.
A breast self-examination once a month is a good way to catch lumps before they become bigger problems. The best way to examine is to make note of nipple size, skin tone, and differences in size. Since most breasts can already feel lumpy, look for lumps that are not regularly on the breast, or if there is thickening around the nipple. Breasts should be checked with three fingers in a clockwise motion, both standing and lying on your side. Check the whole breast area, including under the breasts and up to the armpits.
A mammogram can also detect breast cancer, and screening is recommended yearly for women over 35. It’s an x-ray that scan the breast tissue to detect cysts and tumors, or abnormalities in tissue. Read more...
Many pregnant women get intense cravings, and studies show that the number one craving is for chocolate. You might be avoiding chocolate because it is “bad for you” or “bad for the baby.” However, chocolate is actually proving to have unexpected health benefits, and these benefits may be doubly important for pregnant women and the development of healthy babies.
We know that chocolate makes us naturally happier. It releases endorphins which act to dull pain and just make us generally feel better. It also stimulates the brain and body. Recent research has found that chocolate can also have positive effects on the fetus. The infants whose mothers ate chocolate regularly throughout pregnancy were found more inclined to smiling, laughter, and were more easily soothed. Strangely enough, it seems that chocolate can make both you and your baby happier.
Chocolate also has several health benefits when taken wisely. Chocolate, especially dark, is full of powerful antioxidants that protect against cell damage. This can be important especially when your body is under the stress of pregnancy. It can also help against fatigue and be preventative against future diseases. When you are pregnant you are more prone to exhaustion as your body supports the development of another person. Read more...
